Lunch at McCarthey's Pub

Had an opportunity over the weekend to meet Gerhardt Yaskow. An indefatigable lover of everything Buffalo and recent - nine months now - owner of McCarthey's Pub at 73 Hamburg Street [google map]. The occasion, the annual docent appreciation lunch sponsored by the Land Mark Society. This is the view looking West down Republic Street from the front door.

I'm new to this part of Buffalo. I've been exploring it slowly past tow years, by canoe, bike and I expect to be doing some walking around here very soon. It's Buffalo's past and I've heard numerous people describe this area - going East from the Commercial Slip - as Buffalo's future. McCarthey's goes back to 1963 and according to Gerhardt - iron workers, grain scoopers and others working along the Buffalo River would come in at the end of their shift for beers and shots. During lunch, too I suppose. I was especially impressed with Gerhardt's growing display of local artists and their work. I've included a few bad shots of some very beautiful glass work.

During our lunch time talk Gerhardt told us about the Larkin Grave Yard, nearby. Where the rubble from the Larkin Admin Building was dumped. I've made plans with another docent to begin cobbling together a PresCo tour next summer - beginning at McCarthey's checking out taverns and churches in the area. "Brews and Pews"...ending back at McCarthey's.

Come on over and explore. Very good chance that you'll place this on your list of new favorite spots. McCarthey's Pub is on-line. And, don't forget about Mazurek's right around the corner on South Park.

Hey, David, the luncheon, like Buffalo Tours itself, was organized and sponsored by the Preservation Coalition of Erie County AND the Landmark Society of the Niagara Frontier as a joint venture.

The complex mentioned is Buffalo Color. Most building are tore down. Lived in that neighborhood for 30 years.
